Today’s Question: Is it okay to break a date with someone at the very last minute if someone better suddenly comes along and asks you out?
Recently, a major social function appeared on my busy calendar, but at the time, I was between boyfriends. Not having a date would have dealt a cruel blow to my reputation as one of my school’s most popular and most desired young women. I mean, my peers expect me to make an appearance at all major gatherings. Had I not gone, people might have wondered why I had been overlooked by the male population. I couldn’t allow this to happen. I have an image to maintain.
Okay, so I approached a guy who we will refer to as Mr. 5. On a scale of 1 to 10, our Mr. 5 is kind of in the middle. I’ve seen better, but I’ve seen worse, if you catch my draft. Anyway, I surprised Mr. 5 by saying I would go out with him, but I warned him against dressing like a dork for the occasion. I told him, too, that if I decided to leave with someone else that night, he wasn’t allowed to complain. Oh, I also told him not to expect a goodnight kiss if I detected a runny nose or a cough. Mr. 5 suffers from allergies. Drippy noses and nonstop sneezing can turn a girl off, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, Mr. 5 was so excited about me asking him out, he went to the mall and bought a brand-new outfit. To demonstrate his thoughtfulness, I strongly suggested that he shower me with little gifts on the night of our date. He promised not to show up at my door empty-handed. A girl likes being pampered and I am no exception.
Okay, here is where things get kind of thorny. The day before this big social affair, a Mr. 10 appeared from nowhere, asked me out, and I eagerly accepted.
Mr. 10 is a solid ten in every way—he’s super good-looking, he is a singer and musician in a local band, and he drives a really awesome car.
Naturally, I had no choice but to cancel my date with Mr. 5. To keep from hurting his feelings, I told him that a cousin from out of town unexpectedly showed up at my door and, of course, I couldn’t ignore a relative who had driven hundreds of miles to see me. I went on to say my cousin had a rare form of cancer and he needed me for moral support.
I heard through the grapevine that Mr. 5 was deeply hurt when I called off our date, but let’s look at this from my point of view. Why should I turn down an opportunity to date a 10? If I weren’t super pretty and super popular and super desirable, yes, I might have kept my date with Mr. 5, but being seen in public with anyone less than an 8 would cause people to talk.
In the end, I did the right thing and my conscience is clear.
Anytime a girl has an opportunity to “up her image,” so to speak, she should do so. Besides, 100 years from now, who I dated that night won’t really matter, right?
I hope I’ve answered your question.
Love,
Cassie
